As reported this afternoon, WWE parted ways with infrequently used SmackDown Superstar Scotty Goldman (real name Scott Colton). Upon the announcement, WWE.com quickly yanked his roster profile, as well as his WWE Universe account — the latter of which he frequently contributed blogs to.
The announcement comes just hours before tonight’s taped edition of Friday Night SmackDown where he competes against Umaga in his first televised singles match in five months.
Of late, Goldman had been hosting the What’s Crackin’? web series on WWE.com — which was renamed Good as Goldman this past week. While the episode was pulled from the front page of the site, it still remains online. In the final episode of the web series, Goldman offers a rather ironic statement.
Goldman starts talking about President’s Day, noting great Presidents in history. A clip then airs of wrestling legend Bob Backlund’s Presidential campaign speech in WWE during the mid-nineties. Backlund proposes for every individual in America to get a job. Goldman echos Backlund’s proposition by bragging about how great it is that he has a job.
“I agree. Great start Mr. Backlund. I’ve got a job! This is my job! I really do this. For a living,” Goldman exclaimed. “I get paid to do this…God bless America.”
Prior to signing a developmental contract with WWE in April 2007, Colton plied his trade on the indy circuit for a number of years. He most notably worked for Ring of Honor under the ring name Colt Cabana, as well as wrestling as the masked wrestler Matt Classic in MTV’s short-lived Wrestling Society X promotion,
Colton would remain in WWE’s developmental system for over a year before making his television debut on the August 15, 2008 edition of SmackDown under the name Scotty Goldman. Goldman lost to The Brian Kendrick in what would turn out to be his best showing in the company as he got a lot of offense in on the former tag team champion. The following week, Goldman would participate in a ten-man battle royal match to determine a qualifier for the WWE Championship Scramble Match at the Unforgiven pay-per-view. Goldman lost after being eliminated by Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder.
Three weeks later, Goldman teamed up with Funaki to take on Vladimir Kozlov in a Handicap Match. The Moscow Mauler slaughtered both SmackDown wrestlers in a squash match. The following week, Goldman lost a quick squash match to The Great Khali. Following the match, Goldman was pulled from the road and sent back down to WWE’s developmental promotion, Florida Championship Wrestling.
During his second go-round in developmental, Goldman was sparingly used in a wrestling capacity. Instead, company officials tried him out as a comedy oriented color commentator for Florida Championship Wrestling’s weekly television program alongside Josh Mathews.
Following the recent slate of call-ups and firings, Goldman was said to be the closest to ready talent in developmental. But despite his talent, he had already been typecast by company officials. According to company sources, officials didn’t believe that Goldman looked like a “TV star,” hence his non-push in the promotion. It was also said that no matter how much personality you have, it’s very difficult to break WWE’s narrow viewpoint of what a TV star is supposed to look like. Goldman fit that outlook to a tee.
Additionally, the creative team was never high on Goldman, thus explaining why it took so long him for him to be called up to the main roster in the first place.
Goldman made his return to television two weeks ago in an Elimination Chamber qualifying battle royal. He was the first wrestler to be eliminated. In his final appearance set to air on tonight’s edition of Smackdown, Goldman is quickly defeated by Umaga. As a result, Goldman failed to garner a single win during his time in World Wrestling Entertainment, falling to a win-loss record that will stand at 0-6.
As far as his future in wrestling is concerned, it can be assumed that he will be returning to his roots in the independent circuit, where he worked from 1999 to 2007.
