WWE is trying to work out a deal with Anthem Entertainment / Impact Wrestling in order to be able to bring back the Broken Hardys gimmick, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Obserer Radio.
Both the Hardys and Impact Wrestling claim they own the rights to the gimmick, with Impact previously sending cease and desist orders to the Hardys. Impact is rumored to want some sort of payment / royalties for the use of the gimmick, which may be what WWE is now trying to work out.
According to Dave Meltzer, WWE does not see long term appeal in the old “Team Xtreme” gimmick and knows that the incredibly popular Broken Hardys gimmick is where they’ll be able to get the most “bang for their buck,” in terms of merchandise sales, future storylines and interest in general.
As of now, a deal is not confirmed and it is possible that all sides won’t be able to agree.
Matt Hardy has been teasing the gimmick, going back and forth with his generic “Team Xtreme” persona and the “Broken Matt Hardy” persona on Twitter and even last night on Raw, where Matt randomly broke into his “Broken” accent at the end of his interview.
Matt has also changed his Twitter name from “#BROKEN Matt Hardy” to “#TORN Matt Hardy.”
