With rumors swirling that WWE is in talks with Sinclair Broadcasting to purchase Ring of Honor, ROH’s chief operating officer Joe Koff sent a message to ROH talent that the talks with WWE are just regarding WWE licensing ROH’s old footage, according to Dave Meltzer.
PWInsider confirmed that talks about licensing the tape library have taken place, with WWE wanting to license old footage to include on upcoming DVDs and specials. Many of WWE’s top stars formerly wrestled in ROH, including Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, Daniel Bryan, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe and more, so WWE would obviously like to have footage of their “earlier days.”
PWInsider also claims that numerous sources in the company are denying that there is any truth to the story of an outright sale of ROH to WWE.
However, in addition to the tape library discussions, there have also been talks about possibly airing ROH TV on WWE Network, according to a WWE source. This would mean that ROH would remain an independent company, but its weekly show would be streamed on WWE Network, possibly in a new “Independent Wrestling” section. This would be similar to recent deals WWE has made with UK promotions PROGRESS and Insane Championship Wrestling, which are set to begin airing on WWE Network soon.
